WRITING AND WEAVING
Writing is playing with words. Weaving is playing with threads. But, both tell a story.
The very first poem I ever wrote, many decades ago while I was still at school, was called the ‘The Whirly Wind’.
Recently, I submitted a piece of weaving which may be in a ‘Celebration of Saori’ exhibition in Clunes next month. I called it, ‘The day the whirly wind came to play’.
I play with words to tell stories, some the truth, others imagined. I play with words to create poems, because sometimes what I want to say, can only be said in a poem, not in prose. I play with words to write books, for stories which need a lot of words, to be told.
I play with threads to tell stories, some the truth, others imagined. I play with threads to create small pieces of cloth, because it is enough to tell that story. I play with threads to create large pieces of cloth, for clothing, or a rug to keep me warm. Sometimes, I play with threads, just to see how the colours of the warp and weft look, when they become one.
I’m not sure if my weaving nourishes my writing or my writing nourishes my weaving. Perhaps, the writing and weaving are the warp and weft of my story.
